For Steelers fans, the Terrible Towel has been a must-have promo product since 1975, when it was created by broadcaster Myron Cope. What many people don't know is that the trademark for the towel is owned by the Allegheny Valley School, which is an organization that serves people with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities in Pennsylvania. In a Super Bowl year, that means sales of 500,000, or even more than 1 million if the Steelers win. That's a lot of promotional towels, but also a lot of fundraising for a good cause.
