Holding Things Together

Here is a shirt that was sent out with Startup Schwag packages at some time in the past. I have a friend who says that all tools either bring things together (e.g., tape, thread) or break them apart (e.g., scissors, knives). Presumably the product that is advertised on this shirt brings things together, probably online.schwag-glue-shirt.jpg

Music Fans Love Free Stuff

Many years ago I shared an apartment with several other young people and one of them was an unpaid intern at a jazz record label. I was a little older than him, and had already developed a taste for paid work, but I still remember sitting on the couch while he described how awesome his unpaid internship was. It ended with "and they gave me this shirt!" (as he pointed at the shirt he was wearing). If only a free shirt could make me as happy as what's-his-face.

Anyhow, free stuff makes everybody happy, and below are some promos that fans like my old roommate collected at the SXSW music festival and at Amoeba Music on Record Store Day.

Drupalcon Schwag

Drupal is an open-source content management system, which means there are thousands of developers around the world working together on it, but not in any one physical location. One way to bring together a diverse community like this is through conventions where members physically get together, like Drupalcon. And one way to make events like this make more of a long-term impact is to have branded items that people can take home with them. One way in which Drupalcon really leveraged the event and the product online was to have a contest to design the official Drupalcon t-shirt. Rather than have the conference organizers create a design, they essentially used the open source model for their own promotional products.

Post-mortem Advertising, Part 5

Believe it or not, this is the fifth time we've featured branded coffins on this blog. And that's not even counting miniature ones used as promotional giveaways. In this case, these caskets were done as part of an art exhibition in Amsterdam that is exploring death, and they were actually made in Ghana, the source of our very first branded coffin post.

Smokin' Crackberry Tattoo

Wow. So, we've seen people tattoo themselves with logos before (not to mention other crazy stuff). So it's not too surprising that someone would get a tattoo of a Blackberry in order to win one. They also get bonus points because the tattoo artist is actually wearing an iPhone T-shirt while tattooing the guy. If this isn't lame enough right now, imagine how lame this will be in a couple years (or imagine having this or this tattooed on you leg). Haven't these people heard of custom temporary tattoos? Tech That: Mahalo Says Thanks!

Mahalo, the world's first human-powered search engine, is actually probably powered by hydroelectric power, but humans do "find and organize the best links" for their search results. With lots of possible searches, Mahalo depends on lots of humans to create those results, including Part Time Guides, Mahalo Mentors, and Full Time Guides. One way to motivate these folks and bind the Mahalo community together is through promos. They even made a special page on their web site, Show Us Your Mahalo, where they feature user-submitted photos of folks with their Mahalo giveaways. Now that's a great way to say thank you, which incidentally, is what Mahalo means in Hawaiian.

Faceball for Jerry

After fighting off a takeover attempt by Microsoft, and a Carl Icahn-led shareholder revolt, it's nice that Yahoo! founder Jerry Yang can take some time out to play faceball, a game created by photo-sharing site Flickr. The game itself is pretty simple, throw promotional beach balls at someone's face while taking pictures. Of course, this isn't the first time we've mentioned Flickr, or their promo beach balls, or even faceball itself. But how many companies have used promotional products so well? They created a game that involved their site and their promos and people actually play it!

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Schwag

The title of this blog post made me chuckle: Throw Me the Schwag! No Time to Argue!, and yes, there is a whole mess of Indiana Jones promotion in our near future. Incidentally, the original whip used in the movie is apparently valued at around $30,000. But you can buy one not used in the movies for under a grand. According to the producer's site:

The 450 series bullwhips, our own production, were used in the Indiana Jones movies. This whip, as the No. 453 8 ft. length or the No. 455 10 ft. length, became an icon when it was so skillfully woven into the story by Glenn Randall, the stunt director for the first movie. It became a recognized part of the Indiana Jones character, and an ongoing factor in maintaining the suspense of the story. Equally as important the association of this whip with these outstanding movies led to a resurgence in interest in whips in movies, stage performances, and in sport whipcracking. There are now large numbers of Indiana Jones fans, many cracking whips.

Indeed.

Onion Swagology: Resident Evil Sand Ball

resident-evil-sand-ball.jpg

The Onion passes judgment:

Item: An odd plastic ball full of glittery sand; when one side is up, the sand falls through to the other side to reveal a Vegas landscape and the words "This fall all bets are off." Turn the ball over again, and the sand falls back to the Vegas side, revealing the black words "Resident Evil Extinction."

Promoting: Take a wild guess.

Relevance to product promoted: Vegas is in a desert, right? Deserts have sand, right? Okay, we get it. Also, they totally got the name of the movie in there.

Item quality: 3. It's a useless tchotchke, so film-specific that we can't pawn it off on Great-Aunt Myrtle and pretend it was a thoughtfully chosen gift. But it is reasonably well-made, and the way the sand falls through the holes to slowly reveal the title, shining up from the remaining glittery sand, is kind of eerie. Wouldn't work too well on an item promoting, say, Winnie The Pooh: Wonderful Word Adventure, but as zombie-film promo merch goes, this is almost classy.

Onion Swagology: Electric Apricot Stress Ball Bus

electric-apricot-bus-stress-ball.jpg

I came for the satire, but stayed for the trenchant analysis:

Item: A soft, squishy foam bus with "National Lampoon Presents Electric Apricot" printed on the top.

Promoting: The sloppy jam-band mockumentary Electric Apricot, directed by Primus frontman Les Claypool

Relevance to product promoted: Acceptable. Electric Apricot follows the zany misadventures of a hard-touring jam band that presumably traverses the country in a soft, squishy foam bus. Or a non-soft, non-squishy real bus. In the crazy, mixed-up, upside-down world of late-period National Lampoon movies, who can even tell any more? Like the film it's promoting, this promo item is probably only amusing to people who are really high.

Item quality: 2. It's sufficiently soft and squishy, and thanks to its complete lack of moving parts, it has yet to fall apart, but it's also insanely cheap-looking; the promo merchants didn't even bother to print the film's title on the sides of the bus.

Stickering the World

Promotional stickers are one of the most inexpensive purchases, yet they do give you the opportunity to spread your brand far and wide. Their easy to mail and the perfect giveaway item because they're so cheap. Rock bands always have stickers because they're a way of raising awareness, leaving a trail of where you've toured, or using as a freebie to bring fans over to the merch table. The Swizzle Inn, a Bermudian pub that's housed in a 17th century house, but has the vibe of a rock club, lets visitors post stickers, write on the walls and pin business cards to the ceilings. With a couple stickers in your pocket, you can take your brand anywhere.

Embroidery Capital of the World

When I was waiting in traffic trying to get in the Lincoln Tunnel the other day, I noticed this billboard. Previously, I had no knowledge of North New Jersey's claim to Embroidery Capital of the World. Apparently Union City staked out this claim early on. Later on, in the 1960s, Union City also became Little Havana on the Hudson due to an influx of Cuban immigrants.

Can Silver Surfer Quarter Escape Feds' Anger?

20th Century Fox and the Franklin Mint created 40,000 quarters, modified to contain the image of the Silver Surfer from the upcoming movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The US Mint was not amused, however. It is illegal to modify US currency, and the mint issued a press release claiming: "The promotion is in no way approved, authorized, endorsed, or sponsored by the United States Mint, nor is it in any way associated or affiliated with the United States Mint," and that they would fine the Franklin Mint. In response, the Franklin Mint claimed that their Silver Surfer-izing of the coins did not compromise the coins' integrity in any way, so it should be allowed. Perhaps we should just go for some chocolate coins instead. I'm sure we could do those in silver (surfer).

All Your Blogs Are Belong to Us

This promotional t-shirt brought back some memories, so I guess it deserves featuring. It seems that it was produced for one of those pay-per-post companies that pays bloggers to create advertorial posts. I'm not sure I like that idea so much, although in all fairness, since this entire blog is done by and for ePromos Promotional Products, Inc. I guess I can't really complain about pay-per-post schemes, although when I talk about the best promotional products company ever in the world, at least the source of my editorial bias is abundantly clear.

Tissue Giveaways: Japan's Top Promotional Product

If you've never been to Japan, you probably wouldn't guess that promotional tissues are far and away the most popular promotional product in the land of the rising sun. In all my years of living in the US (32 if you're counting, I am not) I don't think I've ever been given a packet of promotional tissues. In Tokyo, you'd be hard pressed to make the same statement after about five minutes. Why? I can't tell you, because I don't know. I can tell you this: as much as I love America, we are the ones missing the boat when it comes to free tissues. Think about it next time you enter a store or come out of a subway station: Would it be better if there was someone there handing you a free pack of tissues? Still not convinced? As the year winds to a close, I'd like to remember some of the top promotional stories of 2006, one of which was definitely Valleyschwag, a company that took free stuff and found a way to sell it to people. With hip Web 2.0 companies using promos to brand build offline, Valleyschwag tapped into the zeigeist and turned it into a brand new business model. Incidentally, the business model started as a subscription model and only lasted four issues. I look forward to seeing where they take it in 2007.

Promotional Roadshow: Brewery Promos Appraised

Sometimes promos are really more like promobilia, especially if they're promoting super brands, super bands or superman. Or beer. In Cincinnati, a couple local brewery buffs are holding their own Antiques Roadshow-style appraisal session for local brewery memorabilia, and some of it can be worth big bucks. According to beer historian Paul Abrams, "If you collected beer cans back in the '40s and '50s, you'd be set. They outperformed stocks." He ain't joking, either. Apparently some beer cans have sold for thousands of dollars on ebay, including a can from Burger beer that sold for over $6,000:

"It's a legendary can," Abrams said of the Burger can, which features an image of a camel asking "Are you thirsty?" Only two of the cans are known to be in existence.

Indeed, that must be one legendary can.

Promos from Around the World: Japan's Coffee Jockey

Someone was luckier than I was last time I tried to buy a coffee from a vending machine in Japan to get a promotional product. In this case, the promo, attached to the coffee in a special compartment in the lid, is a figurine of a famous japanese jockey. I'm guessing it may be Yutaka Take, who seems to be the most famous jockey in Japan right now. Amongst other accomplishments, he apparently won the Japanese Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing last year. If this figurine is anatomically correct, it seems to indicate that while he may have the small frame typical of most successful horse jockeys, his head is surprisingly large.coffee-jockey.jpg

Sports Illustrated Celebrates Top Baseball Promos

Professional sports in general have been avid users of promotional products to promote fan loyalty and game attendance, but baseball has probably done it best through the years. John Rolfe at Sports Illustrated recounts some of his favorites:

Baseball history is loaded with inspired promotional events -- from Cleveland's infamous Nickel Beer Night in 1974 to my personal favorite: the annual Jay Buhner Buzz-cut Night in Seattle during the '90s. Bald fans, or those who agreed to have their noggins shaved -- sometimes by the beloved chrome-domed outfielder himself -- got in free and were awarded a crisp "Take me out to the Bald Game" or "Bald is Buhnerful" T-shirt.

On August 10th, lucky Minnesota Twins fans received John Mauer sideburns as a special promotion. Which, of course, mostly reminds me about how Don Mattingly got kicked off Mr. Burns' softball team for his sideburns.

Can't Stop the Childvertising

childvertising-jake.jpgThe childvertising continues. The latest incident comes to our attention courtesy of adfreak via Ilise from our Merchandising Department. It seems an enterprising mother is auctioning off the rights to clothe young Jake in corporate logo apparel for a year for a paltry $100,000. Presumably this revenue will be set aside for Jake's college education, where he will presumably study marketing.

Of course, as Helen Lovejoy might ask, "Won't somebody please think about the children?" Given the relative recency of the childvertising explosion, it may be years before we know the effects it has on the children involved. I suspect it may turn out to serve as a form of "gateway marketing" that eventually leads to headvertising. I hope I'm wrong.

Valley Schwag 3 was sent out recently, so flickr is chock-full of photos of this month's schwag. It seems like it's even more popular than when we first mentioned Valley Schwag here. Will we look back on it as an example of the execesses of the second Internet boom? As I write this, I just realized I'm wearing a promotional t-shirt from the first Internet boom. More Childvertising

As previously reported on Everybody Loves Free Stuff, the childvertising epidemic continues to run rampant, as evidenced by this photograph. While trade shows and organizations like Valleyschwag provide most of the raw promotional materials, the parents are ultimately responsible for this tragedy. As the caption to this photo posted on flickr clearly indicates, the innocent children involved are forced into childvertising against their will, or at least without their consent:

"What better way to celebrate Valleyschwag and Ruby on Rails than to make my kids wear the stuff?! "

Indeed. When the laws of our country essentially treat minors as chattel, what better way to celebrate than to use them as pawns in a game of advertising and promotion? Of course, as insidious as it may be, it is rather cute, which is why we sell promotional apparel for children.

Intra-company Promotion, a VC Perspective

Venture capitalist David Hornik recently wrote a great post about promotional products (schwag) on VentureBlog. I'm quoting a big chunk because it's so good, and because it's a perspective on promos that you don't really get all that often. Of course, you should visit VentureBlog and read the rest. Here's what he has to say about the value of branded apparel and products for employees, and how it both signifies and reinforces company culture:

But the schwag that I think really matters is the intra-company schwag. I am not a VC who minds his money being spent on t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts. In fact, I encourage it.

Teams that love what they池e working on, want to wear their company logos. They want to have the t-shirt or the hat or the polar fleece. And the act of wearing the shirt of the company you love is self-reinforcing. It makes you love the company all the more. I remember visiting Yahoo in the late nineties and being struck by the fact that about 3 out of every 4 people I passed in the cafeteria was wearing a Yahoo t-shirt of some kind or another. It wasn稚 a dress code. It was a testimony to the culture Jerry and Dave had created from the very outset of the company. The same is true of my portfolio companies. They celebrate successes with company t-shirts. They give company laptop bags for the holidays. Their employees wear company baseball hats to lunch. And I, their board member, proudly rotate through my portfolio company sweatshirts when walking in the morning.

Yakuza Promos in Tokyo Raiders

yakuza-giveaways.jpg I was reading a rather dry press release about how "The successful and measurable Japanese marketing tactic of promoting products and services through the distribution of pocket tissue packs carrying ad messages to consumers has made its way to the United States," which reminded me about Tokyo Raiders. Specifically, the part when the good guys get ambushed by the Yakuza in a park and ask how the gangsters knew where to find them. One of the Yakuza replies, "You took the tissues. LOGOclash! Don't Let It Happen to You.

logo-clash.jpg
LOGOclash! is the jarring dissonance created by wearing multiple logos in the same outfit. It's one of the most serious fashion issues facing us today. Below is an introduction to LOGOclash! and information on how you can avoid it.

I ran into my double Babolat wearing friend in the elevator and we started talking about the fact that he gets a lot of compliments when he wears the t-shirt-sweatshirt combo together. We also got to talking about how LOGOclash! is a serious problem sometimes. Just then, a guy carrying two tennis raquets walks by wearing a Fila warm-up top and Puma pants. Let me tell you, the combination was not aesthetically harmonious.

As a company that sells logo apparel, I feel we have a moral obligation to educate people about the dangers of LOGOclash! and how they can avoid this problem. For starters, if you are purchasing apparel with your logo, try to purchase a set of items that can be worn together, like a hat, t-shirt and fleece combination. This will increase the likelihood that recipients will wear these items together, rather than with other apparel items that may have logos that create LOGOclash! Secondly, make sure your logo is printed or embroidered consistently across all apparel items. One of the worst forms of LOGOclash! occurs when a single company logo is rendered inconsistently on different pieces of clothing.

Together, we can help fight LOGOclash!

Major fast food companies have had a lot of success promoting to children with small toys used as premiums, so given the recent attention they've gotten for helping make Americans the fattest people in the world, perhaps it's inevitable that there would be some satirical response. In this case, that response comes in the form of some adorable vinly dolls created by Ron English and featured in Juxtapoz Magazine which bear a resemblance to a well-known fast-food clown. Given that backlash, if not the sincerest form of flattery, is at least a leading indicator of commercial success, perhaps custom toys could help your brand make an impact.
