Bagvertising: Hot Bags & Bag News

Bags: you pretty much can't live without 'em. But you can stop stores from giving them out for free, which is what China is doing, effective June 1st. Following the footsteps of Ireland, China is banning shops from handing out free plastic bags, which are a major source of plastic pollution in the country. In the US we haven't banned disposable bags, but at least we have celebrities promoting alternatives. Below, there's an amazing wooden bag created for Booji Tea House & Spa, which while probably not practical as an everyday tote, is quite amazing.not-a-plastic-bag.jpg

Target Wins Logo Showdown

fortune-logo-competition.jpg

Target triumphed in a recent Fortune Magazine battle of the logos, taking out Nike's swoosh in the semis and the CBS eye in the finals. Although I feel a little gypped that the winner was basically a circle inside another circle, it does look good on a reusable shopping bag. Perhaps next month Fortune can do a reusable shopping tote smackdown between target and IKEA.target-shopping-bag.jpg

SXSW 2008: A Lot of Schwag

South by Southwest is probably the biggest independent music conference in the world, with hundreds of bands, thousands of attendees and lots of free stuff. Ever have to put together conference kits? Well, if you feel sorry for yourself, just check out how many goodie bags the folks at SXSW have to put together every year. In addition to the bags that are given out at the conference, there's loads of other stuff given out by bands, record labels and sponsors. For a lot of attendees, the free stuff is a highlight of the event. Or at least something to arrange carefully, photograph and post online, generating additional exposure for the organizations giving it out.

Disposable Bag Backlash

Paper or plastic may be a question of the past. And that would be good. With oil prices and carbon dioxide levels at all-time highs, there's no time like the present to address some of our more wasteful consumer practices. First up: disposable bags (although bottled water isn't too far behind). The future of shopping may be a lot like what you see in Dublin, where they passed a law in 2002 that places a 33-cent tax on disposable bags. Within weeks, plastic bag use dropped 94% replaced largely by the reusable grocery bags that are getting more common in the US every day.

Bagvertising Unlimited: Hair Carry

The execution on these haircare product bags is phenomenal. They take your normal shopping gift bag and turn it on its head with braided "hair" handles. Extra points for doing bags in different hair colors.

Shopping Bags as Fashion, and Billboards

In the New York Times there's a great article about the showdown between popular high-fashion stores to have the best branded shopping bags. Working with top designers and cutting edge materials, they realize that a durable, fashionable shopping bag makes a great billboard for their brand. Increasingly, a quality bag gets reused over and over, acting as a walking billboard. According to the article: “It’s an unspoken goal,” said Terron E. Schaefer, senior vice president for marketing at Saks, which just redesigned its bags to be sleeker and heftier. “We want people to keep the bag.” Check out the article to see a few of this season's "it" bags!
