And kawaii is the Japanese word for cute, which must surely apply to this as well:

I know it's not unique to Japan, but doing a promotional giveaway tied to a celebrity is definitely a doubly effective there.
Japanese Promos: Reusable Shopping Bags

Japan is a fairly densely populated group of islands without a whole lot of natural resources, so it's not surprising that they're really advanced when it comes to stuff like recycling. However, they are also really into nice packaging (after all, they do sell fruits in wooden gift boxes). The question is, will reusable shopping totes take off? My guess is yes, particularly now that even China has banned disposable plastic bags.

Japanese Promos: Jim Beam Sumo Doll

I'm not sure what is the opposite of a bamboo toothbrush for people concerned about what they put in their mouths. However, I'm thinking it may be this Jim Beam toting sumo wrestler doll. Here in the US, Jim Beam usually gives out baseball caps and tumbler glasses. No imagination, I tell ya.

Japanese Promos: Bamboo Toothbrush

Bamboo promotional products are becoming more popular in the US as part of our move towards more eco-friendly promos. (Bamboo more sustainable material to produce than most woods and fibers.) In Japan, many bamboo products, including this bamboo toothbrush are becoming popular as people seek both eco-friendly and healthy alternatives to many products. I personally think the promotional toothbrush is underrated, and a bamboo one would be even better.

This photo caught my interest for a couple reasons. First, Sprite had a really awesome logo back in the day. Second, Sprite matches? It seems odd at first, but although I think of Sprite as a soft drink, I guess it may have been an important part of cocktail hour for an older generation.

Vintage Needle Giveaways

Here's something you don't see anymore: sewing needle giveaways from grocery stores. I'm not sure when these are from, but I guess it was back when people might actually sew stuff. The Owl supermarket promo apparently had about 40 needles, which is probably a lifetime supply for an entire city these days. Of course, in a couple years, perhaps the needle kit will make a comeback, along with vegetable seed packets and other survival promos.

Promo Sales Hit $19.44 Billion in 2007

Overall promotional sales were up for the 5th year in a row, reaching $19.44 billion in the US. That's about 3.5% growth, which is modest unless you compare it with many other media: newspapers (down 9%), television (down 4%), business magazines (down 4%), etc. Other bright spots in advertising include event sponsorships (which often include promo use), outdoor, and internet advertising. For 2008, most promotional product suppliers predicted growth, a tough call in this economy. However, if advertising dollars continue to flow our way from mass media, it just might happen. (Industry data from the PPAI

Tech That: Mahalo Says Thanks!

Mahalo, the world's first human-powered search engine, is actually probably powered by hydroelectric power, but humans do "find and organize the best links" for their search results. With lots of possible searches, Mahalo depends on lots of humans to create those results, including Part Time Guides, Mahalo Mentors, and Full Time Guides. One way to motivate these folks and bind the Mahalo community together is through promos. They even made a special page on their web site, Show Us Your Mahalo, where they feature user-submitted photos of folks with their Mahalo giveaways. Now that's a great way to say thank you, which incidentally, is what Mahalo means in Hawaiian.

Tech That: Microsoft Stuff

In a series of posts compiling tech company promotional products, I guess I can't skip Microsoft. Via Schwag Addict, here are a ton of Microsoft giveaways, from a promo bag, to pens, USB flash drives, mints, a carabiner and more. If I were a Microsoft fan, that would be all I need. Oh, and this paddle ball game. And that's all I need.

Tech That: Grab Bag

Why do tech companies love to use promos? If they're web-based, it may be just about the closest thing they have to a tangible product. Also, though it does seem a bit ironic, conferences and other events are very important places for tech professionals to connect. Given the importance of early adopters, and the fact that particular areas may have relatively small communities where people are involved and innovating, individuals matter, and promotional products can be a great way of reaching them. To start things off, here are some promos from Search Influence, including both traditional items like promo t-shirts, but also some more unique items, like a printed guide they wrote.
