The bar was set high by Mexico in 1968, but Otl Aicher and his design team were able to keep pace with some really terrific visual design, seen here in a lapel pen and a set of flower vases.
They also came up with a really great mascot, Waldi, the dachshund. Waldi was actually the first Olympic mascot. Not only is the wiener dog popular in Germany, it also embodies the Olympic traits of resistance, tenacity and agility. Supposedly, anyways. It was colored brightly to convey the joy of the games:
