By now you’ve probably heard about BP’s massive Deepwater Horizon oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico. Oil is washing ashore in sensitive coastal ecosystems, and people that rely on healthy populations of fish and shrimp to make their livings are at a loss about what to do next. There aren’t many answers yet, but a new fashion trend may provide some relief.
In affected areas like New Orleans, t-shirt vendors have been selling custom t-shirts featuring designs that support fishermen and the coastline. Many of these businesses have committed to donating at least a portion, if not all, of the proceeds from shirt sales to charities and organizations such as the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana.
These charitable contributions may not seem like much, but literally anything helps in a situation as dire as this – even if it’s just awareness generated by the promotional shirts. Hopefully BP will get their mess cleaned up sooner than later. You can read more about this story here.
