Olympic History: Seoul 1988

Halfway between the Tokyo Olympics and this year’s Beijing Olympics, South Korea enjoyed the Olympic spotlight. While a few nations, including North Korea, boycotted the games, participation was much higher than in the last two olympiads. While the Korean government hoped the games would legitimize Korea as a new economic and political power, it backfired somewhat. Protests in 1987 forced the President out of power and led to direct elections and the transition to democracy in Korea. olympics-seoul-88 shirt

More importantly, the 1988 Olympics featured the incredibly cute tiger mascot Hodori, later declared by me to be the awesomest olympic mascot ever:olympics hodori
