The Strategic Name Development blog has some interesting analysis of the recent announcement that the Mets’ new stadium will be called CitiField. While it’s a huge branding opportunity for Citibank – a promotional product the exact size and shape of an actual stadium! – many fans lament the loss of the Shea Stadium name. Why? Well, probably not because William A. Shea was a lawyer, but because he was responsible for bringing National League baseball back to New York in 1962 (the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants left in 1957). Right now it looks like we have until 2009 before we start getting CitiField baseball promos.
